1. In your opinion, what is the best translation of a book to a movie?
Hmm. Holes was good, true to the book. All the Harry Potter movies so far have been good although there were a few things left out of number 4 that I think should have been included.
2. The worst?
Honestly I don't think I've seen all that many movies made from books, or more likely I didn't know they were from books. Can't really think of a worst.
3. Had you read the book before seeing the movie, and did that make a difference?
In general, no matter which I'd "seen" first I still prefer the book because it always has more detail. With some hard to follow books I prefer the movie only because it can be easier to follow. However this is rare and right now I can't think of an example.

I saw Holes, but never read the book, so I can't compare the two. I like all the Harry Potter movies as well, but wouldn't go so far as to call them great adaptations because they always leave so much out!
I never saw Holes either.
I did see the first Harry Potter movie but preferred the book for the reason of details omitted.(at which I was very disappointed)
I haven't yet seen Holes nor have I read the books.
I have enjoyed all the Harry Potter movies, even when they fall short of the books. As you pointed out, books more often than not have more detail than a movie allows. I get a kick sometimes out of seeing how the writers and director interpret books I've read.
I have neither read nor seen Holes, but I do agree, a lot was left out of HP 4 that I thought should have been included; out of the 4 first ones, it was the most underdone, in my opinion.
I like your challenge, I might have to take it up!
I'm waiting to see *all* of the HP movies until I finish Half-Blood Prince (which will be this weekend) -
thanks for visiting!
I've never read the Harry Potter books, but the movies do seem like pretty true renditions. As I said, I find movie renditions of books are generally pretty good, contrary to what we might expect.
