Chick-lit

At a Yahoo! Group I'm in we've been recently talking about Chick-lit and if the name is derogatory and if the genre itself is misunderstood. We were directed to this article at Chicklit Books which I think is a good read and explains what chick-lit is really well.

Now I've not read a lot of chick-lit, mostly because my life isn't much like the lives in the stories so I can't identify. I will admit though that I probably haven't given the genre a fair chance.
However, I’m imploring you now: don’t be fooled. Some of the covers with embarrassing titles and pictures of legs or shoes or shopping bags are truly masking meaningful, touching, hilarious at times and wonderful chick lit stories. - Chicklit books
I'm guilty of that. It's those covers that often deter me from the books. I am vowing now to give the genre a chance and read some more of it. I've already picked some Janet Evanovich for my Reading the Authors challenge, I'll see about reading some chick-lit for my Reading the Alphabet challenge. If anyone has any suggestions of chick-lit that starts with a letter I don't have assigned reading for yet, let me know here.

As for the name chick-lit. I don't find it derogatory at all. I don't mind being called a chick and it IS literature for chicks. I really don't see men reading most of the books.

I read a couple of chick-lit author blogs and they've said how a lot of the time they don't get a choice on the artwork. I'm still guilty of judging a book by its cover too though.

Evanovich is chick-lit? I had no idea. I thought she was mystery, but maybe a book can be a chick-lit mystery! I can't offer any suggestions, because like you, I haven't been able to identify with even the blurbs about the books, so they've never appealed to me. But one book I thought would be a chick-lit book (and maybe is?) but was really a great read was Little Beauties by Kim Addonizio. Of course, I judged it by its baby-blue cover when I shouldn't have. :)

I read some chicklit, but not a whole lot. I have nothing against the category--or the name. I admit that I do judge books by their covers--often the cover is the reason I will pick up a book and check out what it's about when I'm browsing in the bookstore. I wouldn't buy a book based on the cover alone, but the cover art does make a difference. I don't think though that chick-lit covers turn me off totally. Sure sometimes the covers are cheesy, but you find those in every book category.

I read a handful of chick-lit (I don't find the name offensive at all... as I call those movies chick-flick anyway and I don't typically watch them either) but I usually find them too predictable that I got bored reading them as you can pretty much guess how it's going to end (thus I love reading thrillers/mystery/murder much more). I even read a book on how to write chick-lit and there is a formula for it!

I tried reading Janet Evanovich (One for the Money) as some said it's funny and it's murder/mystery. To me, it really is more chick-lit with a murder/mystery element in it, rather than murder/mystery with a girl as the main character (e.g. Tess Gerritsen's books, Kathy Reichs's books, Patricia Cornwell's books). I'd love to hear your thoughts on her books as I gave up after reading the first one... the main character frustrated me and I had no desire to continue...

Like you said, I think I just don't identify with a lot of the characters...

Christa... Yes I agree that Janet Evanovich is chick-lit with a mystery element. I only ended up reading One for the Money although I had intended to read more. I'm not really a series person plus I don't read fiction that much anyways. It was good though, I enjoyed it. It's maybe just not my kind of book.
